What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is an anesthetic that blocks pain during surgical procedures. It’s been in use as an anesthetic for decades, but more recently, it has become a useful evidence-based treatment for chronic pain and mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anorexia nervosa, postpartum depression, and substance abuse.

What are Ketamine Infusions?

Ketamine infusions deliver the drug directly into the patient's bloodstream. The infusion flows steadily through a catheter into a vein in their arm or hand.

This therapy "resets" the pain signaling network in the central nervous system, providing relief from chronic pain. It also stimulates the body to produce chemicals that create new connections between brain cells that boost mood.

Is Ketamine Therapy a Good Choice for All Patients?

Ketamine injection treatments are effective for many patients, but there is a possibility of side effects. Therefore, it isn’t always the first treatment your provider at Sunshine Interventional Pain and Wellness Center uses.

Chronic pain often responds well to physical therapy, oral medications, interventional procedures, and/or surgery. Ketamine therapy may be an option if standard therapies fail to relieve painful symptoms. The therapeutic effects of the medication frequently last for weeks to months after the treatment sessions.

Mental health conditions frequently improve with antidepressants combined with talk therapies. Ketamine therapy for depression is becoming more common due to its effectiveness in treating severe depressive symptoms. A psychiatry professional must establish an appropriate diagnosis before starting therapy at our Orlando ketamine health clinic.

What Happens During a Treatment Session, and When Does the Medication Take Effect?

To begin ketamine injection therapy, your provider inserts a catheter into an arm or hand vein. The catheter is connected to tubing and a syringe is filled with the medicine. For mental health, the treatment lasts for 40-60 minutes or so, and for pain, the infusion lasts four hours.

Depending on the dose you receive, you might experience lightheadedness, disorientation, and other effects. You’re monitored by an anesthesiologist during the procedure to ensure that you receive prompt assistance if you do suffer any side effects. You will be discharged within 60-90 minutes after the treatment is completed.

Patients often experience pain relief and a lightening of their mood before completing their first infusion. Most people enjoy the best results from having a series of infusions (three within one week). Booster infusions may be necessary every three weeks to three months to maintain the therapeutic effects.
